Over Looked: Chris Stolz
"Over Looked" is a new video series, we started producing in 2019. Our first piece featured Filmer/Photographer Preston Hoffman. Our second follows behind the scenes w Mt. Hood based music producer, Chris Stolz also known as Tired Eyes. When it comes to creating music Chris looks to the outdoors and nature for inspiration. So often we can overlook the little things that are right in our backyard.
Age: 35
Location: Rhododendron, OR
Hometown: Portland, OR
Years Producing Music: 16 years
We originally heard Tired Eyes when he produced the soundtrack for the 2007 ski film, Idea by Nimbus Independent. After moving to OR we ended up meeting with Chris through mutual friends. The original Treefort home/office was based down the street from Chris' recording studio he built in one of the spare rooms in his house. His use of organic sounds delivers the feels we were searching for and we asked to share his music in our videos. Over the years of getting to know Chris, we found that we share many of the same perspectives in life and in work.
The creative process is different for everyone, but for Chris, he sticks to being outdoors and totally alone. With space and separation, he is able to slip away into his own thoughts and create a style without influence from others. Chris crafts his beats organically using inspiration from unique sounds that are most often discovered in nature. Combining real instruments and sound samples, Chris starts out with something simple that allows him to build his song. By recording his own sounds and starting with something original Chris is able to develop his distinct style in his tracks. Throughout the process, Chris reminds us that nature will not judge you. By having a judgment-free zone Chris truly feels like he can be creative. We really appreciate his natural approach to music, creativity, and life which has been a huge inspiration to our approach as a business.
